Top 5 Reasons to Visit Aspen this Spring

Aspen HIghlands Closing Day party

Thousands turn out in crazy costumes for Closing Day at Aspen Highlands.

To put it simply, life is a mountain not a beach. At least that’s how you might feel once you get a chance to visit Aspen in the spring. You can follow the crowds to the coast or you can come to the Rockies where long warm days, sunny skies, and great snow conditions make for some of the best skiing of the season. There are also those great après ski parties, not to mention on-mountain champagne bars (courtesy of Veuve Clicquot) and the local’s favorite yearly ritual of celebrating Closing Day. So when it comes to booking your spring break vacation, you can still pack that bikini—just be sure to wear it under your ski clothes for an après ski hot tub session.

#1) Sunset skiing
As the days get longer and warmer, Aspen Skiing Company often will extend lift hours on Aspen Mountain and Snowmass until 6 p.m. for sunset skiing. Take our word for it: there is nothing better than watching the alpenglow cast it’s pastel shadows across the Elk Range from the gondola as Aspen’s city lights sparkle below—the best part is the ski down. // Aspen Skiing Company 970-923-1227

#2) Experience what it really means to be on Cloud 9
We promise this is one of those #onlyinAspen experiences that will have you posting those “check out how much fun I’m having” photos all over social media. Lunch at Cloud 9 is about so much more than the food. Come for the late seating and don’t be surprised if you find yourself dancing on the tabletops while someone sprays $1,000 bottles of champagne in your face. Not only is it the best dance party in town, the food is to die for, and so is the view. // Cloud 9 Bistro, 970-923-8715

#3) Shop ‘til you drop.
If you thought “discount” and “Aspen” were two words you would never find in the same sentence, think again. The end of the season is the best time to go shopping in Aspen as retail stores do their best to unload whatever winter inventory they have left. Deep discounts mean finding some of Aspen’s best designer duds at affordable prices. Some of our favorite sale racks can be found at Lululemon Athletica, Free People, and Blooming Birds, Aspen’s original luxury shoe store, but count on discounts and great sales everywhere. //Free People, 970-925-2646//Blooming Birds 970-925-2241//Lululemon Athletica Aspen 970-925-2033

#4) Easter in Aspen
From Easter services on top of Aspen Mountain to some of the best bloodies and brunch anywhere, Aspen is the place to be on Easter Sunday. Start our your day at nature’s church on the summit of Aspen Mountain where over 1,000 people come out for services provided by the Aspen Chapel. Then ski for a few hours, or at least long enough to burn some serious calories to justify the indulging you’ll be doing at that huge Easter brunch buffet. Check out the special spread including Easter egg hunts for the kiddos at Element 47 at The Little Nell, Prospect at the Hotel Jerome, and Trecento Quindici Decano at the St. Regis. //Element 47 970-920-6330//Prospect at the Hotel Jeromone 970-920-1000// Trecento Quindici Decano 970-920-3300.

#5) Closing Day at Aspen Highlands
If you like Halloween and you like skiing, you’ll love the festivities that close out the season at Aspen Highlands, by far the biggest party of the year. Thousands of ski and snowboard fanatics come from all over for this hoorah before the lifts close to dress up in wacky costumes and vintage ski gear (the uglier the eighties one-piece, the better) and party the afternoon light away at the base for the biggest DJ dance party of the year.
